The modern day Democratic Party is suffering from a serious delimman. It has it's beginning in the depression and has grown with the popularity of social security. Back in the thirties many elderly people reached the age where they could no longer support themselves, only to find they didn't have enough money to live on. The government stepped in and over the years the social secuity grew to assume a prominant position in the retirement income of most Americans. The Democrats were very pleased with their success, but underneath they realized that the average person could not take care of himself. This concept of dependence on govenment became the dominate feature in the developement of future programs. These programs in and of themselves do not represent the problem. The problem stems from the fact that the leadership cannot say that the people cannot take care of themselves. The programs are put forth as ways to promote fairness, but the promoters consider the receipients as incapable of fending for themselves. This puts these promoters in the untenable position of having to decieve those whom they proport to help. Since they are living a lie they come across as untrustworthy and cannot get out of the trap they set.
